Comrades Marathon Runners Raised R160 000 for Kids with Cancer (success Story#02)
Comrades Marathon Runners Raise Over R160,000 for Kids with Cancer

Nineteen dedicated runners in the Comrades Marathon have raised over R160,000 for Rainbows and Smiles, a charity supporting children with cancer… but they still need our help!
In a heartwarming display of solidarity and determination, 19 dedicated runners have raised an incredible R160,000 for Rainbows and Smiles, which supports children with cancer.
These inspirational individuals are set to participate in the 97th Comrades Marathon today, an ultramarathon renowned as the world’s largest and oldest. Over 20,000 runners will tackle the 88-kilometre course between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, and 19 of them are not only pushing their physical limits but also rallying for a cause close to their hearts.
Rainbows and Smiles, a foundation dedicated to providing emotional, social, and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening illnesses, will benefit from the funds raised by these passionate participants.
Bonni Suckling, the founder of Rainbows and Smiles, is at the forefront of this remarkable effort. Having faced the heartbreak of losing her son Jed to terminal brain cancer, Bonni transformed her grief into a mission to support other families navigating similar hardships.
She shared, “Over the years, the organisation has grown, but our inspiration is never forgotten, and we remain an approachable and welcoming charity.”
Rainbows and Smiles plays a crucial role in supporting hundreds of children and their families across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, and Durban. The foundation collaborates with healthcare professionals to offer complementary support and care, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
In South Africa, nearly 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually, with experts estimating that around 3,000 cases actually occur each year. Due to socio-economic challenges and low awareness, many children are diagnosed late, facing a tougher battle. However, with early detection and proper treatment, survival rates have dramatically improved, exceeding 80% for some cancers.
The 19 runners have each created crowdfunding campaigns on Backabuddy, collectively surpassing R160,000 in donations. Each runner brings a personal connection to cancer, fueling their dedication to the cause.
